Piazza della Repubblica is a square in the historic center of Florence with a rectangular shape. It has been the center of the city since Roman times and was born at the crossroads between the cardo and the decumanus of the ancient Roman city. The square took on its current form in the restoration carried out between 1885 and 1895. The west side is delimited by porticoes that run northwards along via Brunelleschi and southwards along via Pellicceria. These two sections of porticoes are joined by a triumphal arch called the Arcone, on the sides of which the porticoes, typical of the buildings of the time, wind their way, which on one side act as a connection with the Post Office and on the other they host the Caffè Gambrinus, an important meeting place in nineteenth and twentieth century Florence. The intervention consisted of the restoration of the plaster, the cleaning of the facades and the waterproofing of the building’s roofs. The porticoes will also be completely restored.
