Built in the 11th century and rebuilt and enlarged in the second half of 1400 in Renaissance style. The last reconstruction, clearly Baroque, is due to Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the most illustrious architect of the time, and sculptor of unparalleled fame. Inside the church, you can admire magnificent works by Caravaggio (The Conversion of Saint Paul and The Crucifixion of Saint Peter) and Pinturicchio.
The following restoration works have been sponsored (end 2006/2007): reconstruction of the facade, roofing, restoration of the pavement that contains the illustrious dome of Bernini.
